Project Overview
In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, European societies are at the forefront of innovation, with cybersecurity playing a crucial role. To fortify Europe’s future, the EU adopted the Cybersecurity Strategy on March 22, 2021, aiming to enhance resilience against cyber threats and build a secure, digital Europe. However, a significant shortage of cybersecurity professionals hampers organizations' ability to address rising cyber risks. According to the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), Europe faces a shortfall of 883,000 specialists, with global demand expected to reach 3.5 million in 2025 (Cybersecurity Ventures). This skills gap threatens networks, data, and infrastructure, underscoring the urgent need for a skilled and diverse workforce to protect Europe’s digital future.
Despite progress, the cybersecurity industry has long struggled with gender disparity. Traditionally viewed as a "boys' club," it has discouraged young girls from pursuing tech careers, leading to only 7% female representation in Europe and 25% globally (ISC² 'Women in Cybersecurity'). Societal stereotypes, lack of role models, unconscious biases, and limited opportunities contribute to this gap.
For cybersecurity to thrive and address emerging challenges, it must reflect the diversity of the society it protects. Diverse teams bring varied perspectives that foster innovation and effective problem-solving. Encouraging young women to pursue cybersecurity is not just about equality but a strategic step toward strengthening the sector. Their unique talents can help close the skills gap, enabling organizations to stay ahead of evolving threats and creating a more inclusive cybersecurity landscape.
To tackle these issues, Europe’s Digital Decade Policy Programme 2030 sets the ambitious target to boost the number of ICT professionals by 20 million and close the gender gap in cybersecurity, supported by the Women in Digital Declaration, which seeks to combat stereotypes, promote female role models, and facilitate skills development.
CyberMe project aims to play a key role in these efforts by equipping young women with the skills and confidence to pursue cybersecurity careers, helping to build an inclusive, resilient cybersecurity ecosystem in the EU.
